Took my good friend from Western MA on his first tuna trip this AM. Buddy Candee hails from Egremont MA and is one of the best deer hunters I have ever known. He has been so gracious to me the last ten years letting my hunt his land that the least I can do is invite him to go fishing when he vacations here in Gloucester.
I have a charter tomorrow so I must give the short form report.
0530...Depart slip
0600...Make bait...great horse mackerel in the liveweill...Burddy catches 6 at a time!
0630 ..Head for the grounds but Mal de Mare hits my guest..I want to turn around but he will have nonw of that!
0700...On the grounds but thick fog. Shearwaters everywhere...It looks fishy!
07:15...Macs are sent out on ballons (wind is blowing to hard to send up the kite)...fog lifts and I see a monster splash 200" from parthers bait. We are in the Zone.
0745...Capt is asleep..goes to the bow as he heard something??? Looks at far ballon floating around and wonders why is isnt down since the rod is doubled over...WTF...WE ARE HOOK UP (someone ahemm! didnt set the clicker)
0750...Rods cleared and we are after him...30 class reel is screaming and 450yds have vanished. Buddy is in the harnsess and starts the battle. When passing the rod to Buddy I cannot believe the weight...this is no football.

0815...Braid back on the reel along with 200' of mono. We are gainin on him
0816...Fish sees boat and takes back 200 YARDS
0830..Buddy is tiring but still fightin..I dance the Lady to the fish every move. FIsh is up near the surface within 100 ' of the boat and....POP...hook pulls...Tuna 1 Anglers 0...but what a battle. We still give each other high fives and salute the fish as this is why I take people fishing...This is the biggest fish Buddy had ever hooked and the memory will be unforgetable!
I am on the fish...if you want to get in the game call now...I fish them they way they want it and right now it is bait...you want a great chance at fighting one of these big boys call me NOW. BTW...2 miles from where we tuna fishing are all the cod & pollack you could ever want in 140' of water!
