time to fill the freezer
30 Jul 2008
With no charter scheduled for today I decided it was time to fish for the family. My wife Diane, along with my good friends Tony and Paul left the harbor around 0630 and headed for the grounds I have been fishing the last two trips. Seas were as calm as you will ever see them so the the Lady Diane pushed out across the Gulf of Maine at 26kts+.
Every day is different and when we arrived on the grounds I noticed the bait was no where near as thick as it was the previous trips. We dropped our jig and started to stick some nice market cod. During the course of the morning we put cod fish to 15lbs in the boat (exactly the size fish I wanted for the freezer) but we never saw a pollack the entire morning.
Around noon I decided to take a ride and explore some areas I hadn't fished this year. It was a perfect day to cruise so the Admiral left orders not to be disturbed and retired to her "cabin" for a quick snooze.

We stopped during the afternoon on many different structures and Tony managed to take the largest cod of the day. We never did find a great body of fish to concentrate on and so around 1430 I decided to return to where we fished in the morning to see if an afternoon bite was happening. When we arrived back on the grounds with only 30 minutes left to fish and we found we had the area to ourselves. Paul dropped his jig using his high tech gear (Shimano Beast Master electric reel...which is another story in itself) and immediately stuck a nice 10lb cod. The machine lit up and and we took a few more for the box before we headed in around 1600. We left biting fish which makes me wonder if a late afternoon bite is happening after everyone has headed for the barn.
We arrived back at the dock around 1800 after a fantastic day on the water with my wife and friends. Good fishing, hours of laughs and plenty of fillets for the freezer for all hands ...it dosent get better than that.
