Wild Weather

24 Aug 2010

I took a ride to the harbor this morning thinking I could sneak out into the harbor to tend my lobster traps.  The closer I got to the coast the harder it blew.  At the marina  I couldn't get the bow out of the slip as the wind was blowing so hard it pinned me against the dock.  The only problem with my boat is that she is light and dosent have the mass to build up inertia quickly.  She makes a perfect kite once the wind catches her so after I bounced her off a couple pilings (thats why I bought a metal boat) I returned her to the slip with the help of a couple of the marina's yard crew who grabbed some lines.  Thanks for the assist guys!   Lobsters will have to wait until Thursday as this blow is not going to subside until Wednesday night

I took a ride along the Gloucester coast and snapped this photo of Mother Nature's fury.

Hard to imagine 2 days ago this ocean was as flat as a pancake.

What effect this blow will have on the fishing is anyones guess.  All I know is that when deep lows come on the groundfish go off the feed.  I saw this happening on my last charter when by 1100 the cod simply stopped feeding.  In the past, once a storm passes and a high pressure builds in,  the dinner bell rings and the cod go on a bite.  Considering the duration of this storm, with a high building on Friday I am expecting a great day and weekend of fishing on my next two trips.  Time will tell if I am right.

A real concern is developing along the coast over the development of Hurricane Danielle which is now located NE of Cuba.  Some of the hurricane path projection models have her intensifying, passing SW of Bermuda on Sunday evening and taking a bead on the US mid Atlantic and New England coast line.  Here is a page that you can follow the storm's development and progress.

Keep your fingers crossed and pray that this bad girl gets shoved way east as she passes by!
