This past weekend was probably the best of the year so far. On Friday we landed our first tuna of the season on a popping rod while on the way to the cod grounds. After a 1 hour battle the guys brought the beast to boatside and she taped out at 68". I wished I could of gotten a girth measurement as she had a huge barrel shape but these fish are extremely difficult to handle at boatside. With 59-72" slot limit now in effect, we swam her for 10 minutes and released her to fight again another day. What a way to start the day. Codfishing was outstanding and the guys limited out on market cod between 10 and 15 lbs.
Saturday the fun continued, no tuna but a limit of cod for the guys. The fishing for groundfish has now moved into the 230' depths but they are stacked like cord wood. We had a huge porbeagle around the boat and he cutoff one of our lines...I need to bring a 50w and get my jig back!I I cut fish for 2 hours straight on the way home and we loaded over 200lbs of fillet into the coolers. If you want to catch a load of cod you should be dialing your phone right now!
Sunday we left the dock around 0430 and spotted a couple jumpers on the way to the cod grounds but no shots. I stopped in the shallow water to see if anything was going on but the tide stage was wrong so I headed east for the deep water. Found them again but the dogfish were on a frenzy this day. As soon as you landed a couple cod the dogs would move in around the boat and I would have to move off the cod to find another bunch. This is the worst I have ever seen dogfish. They increased the commercial quota but it should be 10X what they are allowing based on what I see. During mid morning a school of tuna blasted through the area so we chased after them. Had some great shots at them but they were just not feeding. The water was FAC (flat a$$ calm) and it is nearly impossible to fool one of these guys in those conditions. After 45 minutes we went back to the cod and finished the trip just 4 cod short of a limit.
On Tuesday I went aboard my friend's boat as a guest and we chased tuna for the day. He likes to bait fish off a kite so we went to the bank. On the way there we saw great bird action and bait inside but he had made his decision to fish the Bank...His boat His rules so on we went. Spent the day catching monster bass and alligator blues (all of which were released) but no sign of charlie. On the way home we got to the area that had the action on the way and wouldn't you know...busting and pushing tuna everywhere. We took some shots but couldnt get tight and being late in the day we pulled the plug on the trip.
Tomorrow I am going out on my boat with a couple hired guns and are loading up the complete arsenal including the 130s...no playing around...time to put some money fish in the boat.
The Tuna are in close to shore..if you like to run & gun, kite fish, or troll no is the time to go TUNA fishing. I dont know how long it will last but I have open dates next week...give me a call and lets get after them!
I will post some photos of all the action at the end of this report later this evening...off to make bait for charlie!
