Cod Fishing is HOT
15 Feb 2009
Even though the snow banks are still high around the homestead, people are looking forward to spring and doing some fishing. My weekend charter calendar in the month of May has only one Saturday and a couple Sundays still available for charter . The April calendar is still wide open and as you will read below it looks like cod fishing might be outstanding a little earlier this year than last. Dont be disappointed...Please call soon to reserve a date for your charter.
On the regulation scene the NMFS has notified us that we are now operating under Amendment 13 due to the recent court decision that suspended Framework 42. What that means is that cod season is now open and the minimum size has reverted to 22". The suspension was originally stated to be for 60 days but in the recent commutation I received from the NMFS it stated "until further notice". It is difficult, actually impossible, to predict what the NMFS and courts will do but I will do my best to keep you informed of any changes as they occur.
There are a couple large party boats who fish year round who have been finding tremendous schools of cod in the former closed area (EEZ)that are on fierce bite. Last week cod fish to 70lbs+ plus were taken and there were reports of many 20-40 lb class fish are hitting the decks. This is primarily a jig bite as the cod are chasing vast schools of herring which is great to see. Hopefully this foreshadows a great spring cod run come April when we plan to go after them with a vengeance!
FInally, please remember that I am offering a $50 discount any charter you book before April 1 for the entire 2009 season. Now it''s time for us to get off the computer and start getting those jigging arms pumped up!!
Tight Lines,
Capt. George
